The Leafs announced this morning that the team had recalled Joseph Woll from his conditioning assignment with the Toronto Marlies. Woll last played on December 7th when he suffered a high ankle sprain.
Naturally, this now means that the team is carrying three goaltenders. They have yet to make a corresponding move other than loaning defenseman Max Lajoie to the Marlies.
Notably, both Jones and Samsonov would require waivers to be sent to the AHL.
Now that Woll has been recalled, the Leafs are currently running with three goaltenders, Woll, Martin Jones, and Ilya Samsonov. This leaves the team in a tough position. If they waive Jones there is a good chance he would get claimed based on the way he's played this season. As such, carrying three goalies may actually be best option. It is not ideal, but this is the same conclusion Elliotte Friedman came to.
