Frost, 24, is still a promising young forward with lots of upside. The former 1st rounder has seemingly fallen out of favor with the Flyers or at least John Tortorella as he has been a healthy scratch for five straight games.
Frost put up a career best 46 points last season but has only gotten into two games this season, failing to record a point in either. Frost has two years left including 2023-24 on his contract and will still be a restricted free agent at the end of it. he comes with a 2.1 million dollar cap hit, making him affordable for just about any team in the league. The Leafs have very limited cap space, but the Flyers could retain up to 50% on his contract if necessary.
The Flyers should be incentivized to trade Frost if they are just going to keep him on the bench. The longer he sits, the lower his value becomes and he isn't helping the team win either. For the Flyers, this is a lose lose situation. As a result, the Leafs could potentially sweep in and grab him on a discount.
One possible solution would be for the Flyers to swap Frost for Nick Robertson. Robertson has been vocal about wanting a trade if he isn't playing in the NHL and so far this season he's been with the Marlies. It would not be the first time a former struggling high draft pick was traded for another struggling high draft pick.
Robertson failed to make the Leafs out of camp despite a strong performance. So far he has six points through 5 games with the Marlies as he's been pushing for a call up. The Leafs did decide to send Fraser Minten back to the WHL today but so far they have not called up Robertson to replace him. This could indicate that the team would rather just move on from the injury riddled 2nd round pick.
As seen on Morgan Frost could be a solid buy-low trade option for the Leafs
