"From the time I was 4 until 38 hockey has been my life and best friend," Thompson said. "I'm beyond grateful and thankful for all the great people I've met and friendships I've made. All good things must come to an end so thank you to all who supported me along this journey."
Throughout his career, he scored 164 points while playing for the Lightning, the Ducks, the Islanders, the Kings, the Canadiens, the Flyers, the Bruins, the Senators, and the Jets.
He has also been an avid supporter of people suffering from addiction, as he battled it himself during his career.
