In an interview with the talented Guillaume Lefrançois of La Presse, Cole Caufield's father, Paul Caufield, recounted what he was doing when his son scored his first National Hockey League goal on May 1.

Paul Caufield was leading his under-15 team, a Texas roster, since his roster was in the middle of the American Championships at that time. It was out of the question to drop his team in case his son scores his first goal. Paul Caufield is a guy of principle.

«I thought Cole was going to play a lot of games in the NHL, and I couldn't stop my life every time he played,» Paul explains.

His wife and Cole Caufield's mother, Kelly, didn't miss out on that goal. She was listening to the game from their residence in a small town of 25,000 people in Wisconsin. She quickly texted her husband, who was attending a Texas Rangers baseball game. When his phone started to vibrate all the time, he was in the bathroom. He still took the time to wash his hands before answering. You cannot say that Paul Caufield is a stressed person in life.

Six weeks later, the couple were at T-Mobile Arena to watch the first game of the semi-final between the Montreal Canadiens and the Las Vegas Golden Knights. They attended their son's first NHL goal in the playoffs.

«It was at the other end of the ice,» says Paul Caufield. He had a first chance, I got up, I thought he scored, we all did «aaaawww». And then he got another chance right away, and he succeeded. It was pretty special, I'll always remember he scored his first playoff goal against one of the best goalies in history, against a future Hall of Fame member. "

Paul Caufield did not hide to throw flowers at Marc-André Fleury. He is already winning points with Quebecers. His wife Kelly Caufield had tears in her eyes when her son scored the goal. Strangely enough, former Montreal Canadiens forward Brian Savage and his wife Debbie were in front of the Caufields.

«It was just the pride that he was living his dream and having so much fun. He's a little guy who does exactly what he wants to do for a living. He is still the same child in our eyes and he loves what he does for a living, "she confided to the representative of La Presse.

Cole's brother Brock, former Cole Caufield teammate earlier this season with the Wisconsin Badgers, has done his part too. The big brother wore a simple t-shirt with the mention "Goal Caufield", one of the best-selling merchandise in recent months for number 22.
