We have a strong feeling that forward Zach Hyman will be leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs this offseason. According to insider Pierre LeBrun, there is a "significant divide" in negotiations between the two parties, and Hyman will likely reach the open market as a free agent later this month.

Every day, more information regarding the issue emerges, and on Friday, it was Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman's time to discuss Hyman and his free-agent market worth on the 3 Thoughts podcast. There is a notion that Hyman may obtain a six-year deal with an annual salary of $6 million later this month as they discussed the competitors in the Hyman sweepstakes, which are now believed to be the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, and Edmonton Oilers. This spurred Friedman to reveal that Hyman may be handed a seven-year, $6 AAV contract!

Hyman is poised to become an unrestricted free agent on July 28 after finishing the final year of a four-year, $9 million contract. Everyone expects him to receive a rise in salary, which the Maple Leafs just cannot afford. Especially if the rumours of a seven-year mega-deal are true.

We've all seen how important Hyman has been to Toronto's top-six forward core in recent seasons, being able to stay up with and get Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner on the ice. When the Oilers re-signed Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to an eight-year, $41 million contract last month, there was hope that a deal could be reached, though Hyman is still seeking a significant rise. The Leafs tried to close the distance, according to Friedman, but it was too far away from what Hyman wants.
