Today the police investigation into the passing of Adam Johnson took a major turn when an arrest was made. After the arrest was made a criminologist took to social media to explain the situation.
Arrest Made In Connection With Passing Of Johnson
Earlier this afternoon reports came flooding in that an arrest had been made in connection with the passing of Adam Johnson.
Man arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after death of Nottingham Panthers ice hockey player Adam Johnson
The arrest was a shocking announcement as many people who had been following this story saw it as an unfortunate accident. Others did believe foul play was possible. An arrest always seemed unlikely either way so today's events led many to have questions of what the next steps are.
Luckily one criminologist was able to take to social media to help explain what the process might be.
Criminologist Reveals The Reason For The Arrest
A criminologist by the name of Dr. Victoria Silverwood decided to put together a thread on X explaining her view on this case.
Thread: I'm a criminologist with 16 years experience researching violence in sport, specifically in ice hockey (PhD, 2016).
I understand the confusion that a lot of hockey players and fans are experiencing at the moment. I teach modules on sports criminology & on homicide
2. While it is not necessary, it is common practice that a person whose actions lead to an unexpected death may be arrested in order for information to be gathered about an event and potentially for restrictions to be put in place (including residing in the country)
3. while investigations are carried out.
As with all unexpected deaths, this matter has been passed to the coroner who will fully investigate the case and pass judgement on evidence.

This process can take months or even years to fully investigate.
Importantly. An arrest does not equal guilt. Even a criminal charge does not equal guilt.
We need to let the legal system run its course and avoid speculating on sensationalised accounts.
This thread explains scenarios that could lead to an investigation without eventual conviction or sentencing. As of now, there is no word on what the legal proceedings will look like. Hopefully for all involved, some peace can be found a resolution that leaves all those affected by such a tragedy can be found.
