Kent Hughes has pulled off a few masterful moves since his arrival with the Habs. The only deal that hasn't paid off yet is the one that sent Artturi Lehkonen to Colorado for young Justin Barron, among others. However, the defenseman is still developing and it's early to say he won't become a major part of the team.
According to Pierre LeBrun, the Avalanche would be interested in coming back to the Habs to fill the hole left by the departure of Nazem Kadri as the team's second centre.
Sean Monahan would be very interesting for the Avalanche, especially since he is off to a good start this season with 10 points in 18 games and has the potential to score close to a point per game.
The other players targeted by Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland are Jonathan Toews and Ryan O'Reilly. In both cases, the price tag would be much higher than getting Monahan.
Already an important player, especially in the face-off circle, Monahan could very well be part of the Habs' plans as well. The centre will be an unrestricted free agent next summer. It remains to be seen if Hughes intends to sign him and at what price, otherwise he might be tempted to trade him by the trade deadline.
