The New York Rangers have emerged as frontrunners to sign Patrick Kane during free agency.

After spending the past season with the Detroit Red Wings, it looks like Patrick Kane was linked to the New York Rangers, where he played between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Red Wings.

With the Rangers, he performed well despite a hip injury that required surgery after New York's disappointing playoff exit in the first round.

However, he was back this season and now, the Rangers appear to be interested in getting him back. He had an impressive season despite his surgery, tallying 47 points in 50 games with Detroit.

According to Chris Johnston:

There's been lots of smoke about a return to the Rangers...If we had to pick a frontrunner, I'd say it would be the Rangers.

During his end-of-season media availability, Kane confirmed that he would be interested in staying in Detroit if he gets the opportunity.

But if other teams with higher Stanley Cup aspirations make offers, Kane could choose to play elsewhere.

At 35 years old, Kane is apparently looking for a two or three-year contract, with the New Jersey Devils also in the derby, according to another source:

Kane's going to be looking for, I would think, something like a 3-year contract. Maybe 2-year. The devils are in the details of the negotiations. I know there's been a lot of smoke about a return to #NYR.

After winning the President's Trophy and losing at the hands of the Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference Finals, acquiring an impact-maker like Kane could give them the necessary boost to reach the Stanley Cup Finals next season.
