After making a big trade to acquire Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor from the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Vancouver Canucks are welcoming a lot of new faces in as they try to make a late season push.
But with those new faces come the removal of others, and the team has decided that Phil Di Giuseppe was the next casualty. It was announced by Elliotte Friedman on X that the team has placed the veteran on waivers.
Di Giuseppe was in his third season with the Canucks. In 2024-25 he recorded one goal and five assists in 20 games as a depth forward for Vancouver.
He is in the final season of his $1.5M deal and will be a free agent at season's end.
Drafted 38th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2012, the Toronto native spent four seasons there and had 14 goals and 27 points in 147 games but added 347 hits.
He ended up being waived by Carolina and picked up by Nashville where he only played a handful of games then signed with the Rangers in 2019-2020. He played 51 games in New York and only had 12 points.
Never able to put his AHL level of output together in the NHL, Di Giuseppe might find himself without a job for the rest of the season. Already 31, he's most likely a 13th forward for a team seeking some insurance.
A standout with the University of Michigan, he played 115 games there before signing as a free agent with the Hurricanes two years after being selected by them.
It's unknown if NHL teams will have a place for the veteran winger, but if they are so inclined they have 24 hours to make a claim, at which point he will most likely be assigned to Abbotsford of the AHL unless they come to a mutual termination agreement.
