In recent years, we've seen multiple teams acquire injured players via trades with the intention of keeping them on the LTIR until the playoffs. While the NHL is not banning such trades outright, they've just issued a memo to every team in the NHL about this matter.

The NHL Warned All 32 Teams That They Will Be Closely Scrutinizing Any Trades Involving Injured Players.

This move by the NHL is aimed at preventing teams from exploiting loopholes in the CBA. In recent years, there have been instances where teams have acquired injured players with the intent of using LTIR to free up cap space. By keeping the injured player on LTIR, the team is able to exceed the salary cap limit, giving them more flexibility to acquire additional players.

To this date, many injured players are in the market and this announcement could have a significant impact on them.

Teams may be hesitant to make trades involving injured players like Gustav Nyquist, Sean Monahan or Adam Henrique.

This is unfortunate as these players have significant value and could help teams during the playoffs.
