In a recent report by hockey writer Chris Gawlik, he suggested that the Vegas Golden Knights could look at adding a superstar at the center ice position. The impending free agency of Jonathan Marchessault and Chandler Stephenson could allow for the Golden Knights to reel in a big fish via trade.
The name mentioned as a potential option is Elias Pettersson. The 24-year-old is heading into the last year of his contract in Vancouver. Pettersson was incredible last season with the Canucks putting up 102 points in 80 games. He also recently decided to pause extension talks between himself and the organization.
Pettersson is heading into his prime and could combine with Jack Eichel to create one of the best center duos in the entire league. Now there are several roadblocks to a potential deal.
First, the Canucks are likely going to be extremely hesitant to trade a player as good as Pettersson to a division rival. Secondly, the Golden Knights do not have a ton of assets that would be appealing to the rebuilding Vancouver Canucks.
This likely makes a trade between the two sides very difficult. But if Vegas can be patient and wait for the price to drop on Pettersson they may be able to swing a deal for him near the trade deadline.
