The Vancouver Canucks landed Erik Brannstrom in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche.

The 2024-25 NHL season is officially underway, with the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres competing in the first games of the year in the last two days.

In breaking news, the Canucks and the Avalanche agreed on the terms of a trade, the first one of the new season!

Vancouver sent the defenseman Tucker Poolman with a 20% salary retention, along with a 2025 fourth-round pick, to Colorado in return for Erik Brannstrom.

The Canucks shared the news with the following post on X:

Brannstrom, drafted 15th overall in 2017 by the Vegas Golden Knights, signed a one-year, $900,000 deal with the Avs back in July. Last season, the 25-year-old defenseman scored 20 points in 76 games with the Ottawa Senators.

With the Vancouver Canucks, he'll likely be a depth player that will get a chance to be in the lineup if there are injuries or other players don't perform well.

Right after the deal was confirmed, the Canucks announced that they've placed the player on waivers:

We learned at the same time that both Canucks players Brisebois and Woo cleared waivers.

After that move, the Canucks have $1.19 million in projected cap space, with 23 active contracts, per Puck Pedia:

As for Colorado, they got Tucker Poolman, or at least his contract, as the 31-year-old defenseman likely won't play a game this season, just like he did last year. He has been dealing with neurological complications from migraines, limiting him to only 43 games in the past two seasons, including three last year.

This season will be the last of his four-year, $10 million deal he signed with the Canucks in 2020.
