Guentzel, 29, is set to become available on the free agent market on July 1. As of now, only the Carolina Hurricanes could re-sign him, but it appears that the forward is interested in testing the market.
Ending their association after a few months would be disappointing for the Canes, as they paid a big price to get him at the trade deadline. They sent two draft picks, three prospects, and Michael Bunting to the Pittsburgh Penguins for him.
If he doesn't plan on signing in Carolina, the Canes' last option is to trade him.
Elliotte Friedman shared that the Canes are asking for a mid-round pick for Guentzel's signing rights:
Guentzel will surely interest many teams in the NHL, and getting his rights before July 1 remains a risk. That's why teams will surely ask that Guentzel agrees on an extension first.
Looking at the draft order and the team's needs, the Chicago Blackhawks appear to be the perfect destination for him.
His experience on Sidney Crosby's line would be very valuable as the Hawks look to surround Connor Bedard with the best possible players.
They also have eight draft picks in 2024, including six between rounds two and six. Sending one of them to the Carolina Hurricanes wouldn't be a huge loss if they can get Guentzel to agree on a long-term contract extension.
