Detroit Red Wings pass on player, Toronto seizes opportunity
The AHL club Toronto Marlies have re-signed one of their top players from last season, Robert Mastrosimone, who was only a rookie.
Mastrosimone was a 22-year rookie last season for the Marlies who was one of their better players. The now 23-year-old will look to build on the performance he had last year as he enters his sophomore year in the AHL.
The Detroit Red Wings drafted Mastrosimone at the 2019 NHL entry draft, 54th overall. They recently decided not to re-sign him after he was under contract with them last season.
Hearing that the Toronto Marlies have re-signed Robert Mastrosimone to an AHL contract.
The 23-year-old recorded stellar underlying numbers in a bottom-six role as a rookie.
Mastrosimone was drafted 54th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 2019. DET opted not to sign him.
Mastrosimone is still looking for his first taste of NHL action. Despite it having already been five years since he was drafted in the 2nd round, no team has been willing to give him a chance in the big leagues.
Now that he is coming off a spectacular year with the Marlies and that the Red Wings haven't re-signed him, perhaps it opens the door for another NHL team to swoop in and snag him up.
At 23 years young, the future is still bright for Mastrosimone. All it takes is one team to give him another shot, and he could prove to be a huge, underrated difference maker at the NHL level one day. But for now, the Marlies will enjoy having his services.
