Although currently in the middle of the 4 Nations Face-Off, Brad Marchand still has his mind on potential trade rumors. Since shutting down reports the team was going to extend him, then dealing with his name being thrown around -- it's a lot for the Bruins leader.
But he's taking things all in stride, as the veteran knows it's just a business. However, he's been with the team long enough that he feels confident he's going to stick around -- for now:
Given that Marchand is such a vital piece of the Bruins identity over the past decade, it would be odd to see him just tossed out without some serious consideration.
But what if Boston doesn't want to keep him? Where could he go? Let's take a look.
Having been a member of the Bruins since being drafted 71st overall by the team in 2006, Marchand has carved out quite the career for himself.
In 1086 games he has 421 goals, 552 assists (973 points) and is a career plus-285 which ranks him first among active players and 34th all-time.
Known for being a pest on the ice, and perhaps getting a few more calls go his way -- there's no doubt Marchand has been as critical to Boston's success as Patrice Bergeron was; albeit in a different role.
He won a Stanley Cup in 2011, and currently has 138 points in 157 career playoff games.
The issue with Marchand is both his age and contract. He's 36, and he's not getting any younger and any potential extension would put him pushing 40.
While it's not to say he can't perform still. This season he has 20 goals and 24 assists in 57 games but who knows how long that production can sustain itself.
Not to mention he currently makes $8M, and will most likely not take a huge dip in salary for an extension. Boston is in the middle of figuring out whether to rebuild or not, and dangling Marchand could end up getting them a hefty return.
Though Marchand has bigger things to focus on at the current moment, there's no doubt that a potential trade looms in his mind. But if he does get traded -- at least he knows it won't be behind his back -- he hopes.
