Cale Makar Breaks His Silence on his Involvement in the 2018 World Juniors Scandal
The investigation into the 2018 World Junior Championship scandal involving team Canada is reaching a point where much of the information has become public. Now one of the other members of that team has addressed the story with the media.
Makar Shares Thoughts About 2018 World Juniors Team And Investigation
Makar has consistently noted that he was not involved in the incident that London Police have been investigating on and off in recent years. Given the recent developments, it would seem that his story is true.
"I've been kind of straightforward from the start that I wasn't there. But again, I'm just gonna leave it back to the people who are handling obviously the work right now."
However, the All-Star defenseman did not stop there. In fact, he has been a leader calling for change in the culture of the sport, acknowledging how far the sport has come in changing the culture, but also noting that there is still a long way to go before hockey is truly for everyone.
"I think we're at a point now where it's very inclusive for everybody, and it should feel that way. And if it doesn't, then we as a league and us as a game aren't doing the correct things to make it feel that way. So, for us, in my mind, I feel like everybody should be accepted, regardless of who you are. And I think that the game has just continued to grow and in that respect, I'm proud of where it's at right now. But we definitely still obviously have a long way to go."
Makar Consistent In His Call For Culture Change In Hockey World
This is right in line with Makar's previous statements about the culture of the sport. In an interview in 2022 about the investigation, he had largely the same things to say about it.
Given how hockey players are known to frequently be quiet about these kinds of things, it is refreshing to see a player as prominent as Makar to stand up for what he believes in publicly. For him to do so on a consistent basis is the cherry on top.
Meanwhile, London Police are set to hold a press conference about the investigation on Monday at 2PM EST. It will be interesting to see what new information, if any, is made public at the event. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see if Makar and his other teammates from that World Juniors team will continue to talk about this issue with the media as the story continues to unfold.
