Connor McDavid Possibly in Legal Trouble After Major Allegations
Connor McDavid may be the best hockey player in the world right now, but that doesn't place him above the law.
Major Allegations Against McDavid for Undeclared Sponsored Posts on Instagram
In a recent report, we learned that the Oilers' captain Connor McDavid possibly broke the law on Instagram.
According to a source, McDavid failed to declare sponsored content, which could result in a hefty fine.
Popular people often use social media to make money. One of the easiest ways to do so is by creating sponsored content for brands.
In a few posts, McDavid promoted the brand Alo Wellness.
Check out the pictures, where we can see the brand's logo:
McDavid Could Face Legal Consequences From the Federal Trade Commission Act
If there's a deal between the brand and the player, and it wasn't labeled as such, McDavid could be in real trouble with the Federal Trade Commission Act, which states:
In short, it all goes back to consumer transparency. Consumers have a right to know in an era of digital promotion what is «organic» and what is promoted because someone genuinely believes in something, or if they are reviewing, sharing, and promoting because they are incentivized to do so. Moreover, it is illegal not to disclose. That's right, it is not just unethical to improperly disclose; it breaks the Federal Trade Commission Act Endorsement Guidelines. Let's be perfectly clear: improper disclosure in influencer advertising and sponsored content is a crime.
A fan went really far by suggesting he should be incarcerated for that:
Need him arrested for undisclosed sponsorship posthaste though.
However, let's not dismiss the possibility that McDavid could simply like that brand and isn't promoting it because of a sponsorship. If that's the case, then he isn't doing anything illegal at all.
