Vincent Lecavalier is one of the better players to ever suit up for NHL games, and now he appears to be taking a step towards coaching in the league.

The legendary center retired from hockey upon the conclusion of the 2015-16 season. Just like that a 1200 game career that spanned parts of three decades had ended. However, it was not the end of his career in the NHL altogether.

Several years later, the Canadiens brought Lecavalier on to join their hockey operations department.

The Canadiens have hired Nick Bobrov and Vincent Lecavalier to join the hockey operations department.

Now it appears as though he may be in line for a promotion, or at least a change within the organization. According to new rumors, Lecavalier could be joining Martin St. Louis' coaching staff for this upcoming season.

"There are some whispers behind the scenes that he could even step behind the bench alongside his longtime friend, Martin St-Louis, to replace Alex Burrows as an assistant."

Montreal Gazette reporter Stu Cowan is also reporting rumors that Lecavalier's position with the organization may be changing soon.

My weekly #Habs Mailbag answering some questions from @mtlgazette readers about Juraj Slafkovsky, who will be first player to earn more than captain Nick Suzuki, management's offseason work and Michael Pezzetta #HabsIO:

Regardless of Lecavalier's future, how the Canadiens manage their coaching staff should be very interesting over the next few seasons.

The team should be transitioning out of their rebuild soon, which will present new challenges for the players and coaches alike.
