NHL insider Kevin Weekes has just broken the news that top Nashville Predators goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov has absolutely no intention of reporting to training camp and instead has demanded to be traded, after months of trade speculation have been circulating all summer.
Yaroslav Askarov was selected at the 2020 NHL draft by the Nashville Predators in the first round, with the 11th overall pick. He's only ever played three NHL games with one win to his name, with a 2.57 GAA and .914 save %.
When the Nashville Predators re-signed their number one goalie Juuse Saros to an eight-year contract, Yaroslav Askarov knew that his time with the franchise was over as he would never get to make a name for himself there. He made his intentions known over the summer that he wasn't happy, but officially demanded a trade today.
Jusse Saros is a spectacular NHL goalie and it's no wonder the team decided he was the one they wanted long-term. Saros was drafted back in 2013 in the fourth round, with the 99th overall pick. He has played in entire NHL career with the Predators and over the years has earned himself 184 wins in his 356 career games. He has a career 2.62 GAA and stellar .917 save percentage.
It was going to be hard for Yaroslav Askarov to compete with a goalie of Jusse Saros' caliber, so clearly it will be better for him to be traded to a different team where he will finally get the opportunity to shine that he wants and deserves.
