The New York Rangers are looking to upgrade ahead of the March 8 trade deadline, but it appears James Dolan's selfishness may hold them back in a huge way.
James Dolan blocks major trade for ridiculous reason
This past week, the Elias Lindholm to New York rumours were red-hot, and after the former Calgary Flames center landed in Vancouver, we may now know why a deal never came to fruition.
"Yeah, (complications) including their 1st round pick in 2024. The New York Rangers would like to add a forward, I'm told they did make an offer for Elias Lindholm... but that after was clearly not accepted. James Dolan wants to protect the 2024 1st round pick so that the Rangers can be part of the spotlight at the Draft at the Sphere because Dolan is also the owner of the Sphere in Vegas. The Rangers want to be part of the spectacle in Vegas."
That report comes from TSN's Darren Dreger, who revealed that it was Dolan's ambition for New York to play a major part in the upcoming draft, due to his ownership of the Sphere where the draft will take place.
Can the Rangers make a blockbuster move to improve without their 2024 first?
Unfortunately for New York, they are a team needing to make a blockbuster deal if they want to become Stanley Cup Champions, and without the use of their 2024 first-round pick as a trade asset, their moveable pieces are certainly limited.
For anyone that has followed either the New York Rangers or Knicks for a while, this isn't surprising however, as Dolan is known to be one of the most selfish and out of touch owners in sports, and if he costs his team a shot at a Stanley Cup run for a reason such as this, Rangers fans may never forgive him.
