Former Leaf Signs in Pittsburgh.
A former Toronto Maple Leaf has linked up once more with former GM Kyle Dubas. Garret Sparks has been signed by the Pittsburgh Penguins' AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, to an AHL deal Tuesday.
Sparks, a native of Elmhurst, IL, joins the Penguins organization after spending most of last year in the ECHL with the Orlando Solar Bears. He's played 40 NHL games, the vast majority (37) of them with the Leafs (he last played for the team in 2019).
In three AHL appearances for the Springfield Thunderbirds, Sparks posted an impressive .924 SV% and 2.38 GAA in a limited sample size.
Depth Signing
It's unlikely, however, that he'll be anything more than depth in the Penguins organization, since he's not signed to an NHL contract with the team and will likely compete with Alex Nedeljkovic, Magnus Hellberg, Joel Blomqvist and Taylor Gauthier for game time in the AHL.
