Sidney Crosby has been a Pittsburgh Penguin for nearly two decades. He's won three Stanley Cups there, and has been one of the most well-respected captains in the league since he was only 20.
He's still an incredible player, but the team around his is falling apart. It doesn't take a genius to realize that the annual retooling of their roster isn't sustainable, and by the end of Crosby's twelve-year contact in 2024-25, the Penguins may need to look at options with their franchise icon.
Crosby grew up a Montreal Canadiens fan in the maritimes, and has expressed that he would love to play in Montreal before. Montreal is looking to contend in a few seasons, and these two timelines could very will fit together.
Aaron Itovitch, an editor and the Canadiens scout at DobberProspects has proposed a league-altering Crosby trade to Montreal.
It would only be right for the Penguins to get some new foundational assets for their longtime captain. The Canadiens could provide this, and Crosby could finish his career closer to him, living out his childhood dream.
It's hard to imagine this happening, but we will just have to wait and see if Crosby ends his career in Pittsburgh.
