Earlier today the Pittsburgh Penguins shared, via their Twitter feed, a heartfelt message from Sidney Crosby to his longtime friend and sometimes teammate Patrice Bergeron:
Over the past two decades, Crosby and Bergeron have faced each other in a number of key playoff series, with none bigger than the 2013 NHL Eastern Conference Finals. On this occasion, Bergeron's Bruins dominated the series, sweeping the Penguins in four straight gameseven though Sid's Penguins had dominated the regular season matchup.
On more than one occasion, however, the two future Hall-of-Famers served together as teammates, donning the red and white uniform of Canada's national team. In doing so, the duo was nothing less than dominant.
Among the most prominent of their victories together was the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, BC where Canada won gold on home ice when Crosby netted the infamous "Golden Goal" for Canada.
Later, in 2016, the two again joined forces to help Canada win the World Cup of Hockey, where Sid and Bergy served as line mates on a souped-up version of the Bruins famous Perfection Line (with Brad Marchand playing left wing).
There's little wonder, then, why Crosby and Bergeron share such a strong bond and mutual respect for one another. And, of course, Crosby is not the only one that will miss having Bergeron as part of the NHL. Happy Retirement Bergy!!
