In a recent ranking posted by the NHL, they examined the top 50 NHL prospects. Obviously at the top sat Connor Bedard which came to nobody's surprise but one thing that was surprising was Shane Wright's placement.
Wright sits at 15th overall, behind some players selected after him (Cutter Gauthier, 5th overall, and David Jiricek, 6th overall). He was also behind two 2nd round selections (Logan Stankoven and Matthew Knies). After being projected as the 1st overall pick for years, Wright fell to 4th overall on draft day and it appears that his fall has not stopped yet.
To say Shane Wright struggled last year would be an understatement.
Wright played on four separate teams: the Seattle Kraken (NHL), the Coachella Valley Firebirds (AHL), the Windsor Spitfires (OHL), and U20 Canadian team (international).
In 8 NHL games, he scored 1 goal and had 2 total points in a very sheltered role. In 8 regular season AHL games, he has 6 points which is encouraging to see. However, in the AHL playoffs, he regressed to 9 points in 24 games. In the OHL he had 37 points in 20 games which is quite impressive but come playoff time, he vanished and posted only 3 points while getting swept. Finally, he posted 7 points during the WJCs but was 6th in team scoring.
Putting it all into consideration, it makes sense why the NHL dropped Wright so far down and if he does not turn things around next year, he will be in serious trouble.
