William Nylander is coming off of a career year for the Toronto Maple Leafs that saw him score 40 goals and have 87 total points, surpassing Auston Matthews on the team in scoring and finishing behind only Mitch Marner. Admittedly, Matthews had a down year but that does not diminish how well Nylander played.
Due to his high performance, William Nylander has asked the Toronto Maple Leafs for a crazy expensive contract. NHL insider, Chris Johnston, revealed what Nylander's contract demands are.
Currently, there are only 15 NHL players making $10 million or more, and three play for the Leafs. Of the 15, the lower end players are those like Aleksander Barkov and Jack Eichel.
In addition to that, there are plenty of superstar players better than Nylander who make less than $10 million, including Nikita Kucherov, Alex Ovechkin, and Matthew Tkachuk.
With that, it looks as if the Leafs may need to move on from Nylander considering they cannot meet his demands comfortably and are currently in a cap crunch being $8 million over the in season salary cap.
Unless Nylander budges on his negotiations, we will likely see him playing for a new team next season which will be unfortunate for the Leafs faithful.
