Now, with five more years of No. 34 in Toronto, one NHL insider has dropped a massive prediction about Matthews as a Maple Leaf:
On a recent podcast, one insider with SDPN dropped the prediction that Auston Matthews could end up as the greatest Maple Leaf of all-time, and while it may sound far-fetched, he may be well within striking distance of the top of that list.
In 481 regular season games with Toronto, Matthews has tallied 299 goals and 542 points, and at just 25-years of age, he's got an incredibly bright future ahead that could lead him down the road as an all-time great Leaf.
In fact, Matthews is just 141 goals behind the all-time Leafs goal scoring record, and at his current pace, he could reach that with at least three years left in Toronto, so this may not be too big of a task for Matthews.
However, one thing that most great Leafs have is playoff success, and with just one first-round victory in his time in Toronto, that's the one area that Matthews will need to improve upon if he is to go down as an all-time Leaf.
The steps were taken in 2022-23, but now the team need a major run, and if they can make that happen, there will be several players on this team going down in the history books with Toronto.
Do you think Matthews can go down as an all-time great Maple Leaf? Or will his playoff success hold him back?
