Insider Elliotte Friedman Confirms Reports of Blockbuster William Nylander Extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has just confirmed the reports that the Leafs are close to getting a deal done with William Nylander, and it is looking massive.

William Nylander is making the best possible case for an absolutely massive contract extension, being one of the hottest scorers this year with 51 points in just 36 games to start the year. There is no question that this season has significantly bumped the negotiations between Nylander's camp and Brad Treliving, which were already likely running against what the Leafs don't have.

Now, it has been reported by Elliotte Friedman and Nick Kypreos that the Leafs and Nylander are nearing the completion of his extension, and it is a whopper. Reports have it at an $11.25 million AAV.

Elliotte Friedman on NHL Network today on a Nylander extension:

"I wouldn't be surprised if it gets done soon... Nick Kypreos he reported they're talking in the 8x11.25M range. I don't know that for sure but I don't think Nick is off too much if he's off at all. I think they're kind of talking about that kind of range. That's not where Toronto was in the summer, now they're in that area and I do think that's going to get done"

Friedman does confirm here that Kypreos' number isn't far off what he has heard, and clearly, Nylander has worked his way up the pay scale this year.

Fans Have Mixed Feelings About Nylander's Worth

This rumor of $11.25 Million is causing some concern for fans, who think that this could be overpaying for Nylander's recent performances only. It was previously expected that Nylander would pull somewhere around the $10 million mark, and that some fans think he isn't worth more.

Willy is referred to in the segment as a 100-pt player. He may do it this year, but he hasn't broken 90 in the league yet and has been ppg+ in 1 out of 8 complete seasons. Has hit 40 goals once on the dot. Love the player and want him re-signed, but totally clear overpayment.

We will have to wait and see the complete details of the Nylander deal when and if they are announced, however, we may not have to wait that long to see it.
