The Toronto Maple Leafs need some defensive help and insider Elliotte Friedman has revealed which player they will target.

Leafs To Target Tanev Per Friedman

There is no question that the Leafs are struggling defensively so far this year. They have lost most of their defensive core to injury and are now left with three players who started the year in the NHL and three who started the year in the AHL on their blueline.

Since the Leafs need help, insider Elliotte Friedman has watched as they have targeted multiple options for their newest defenseman. He has revealed that the Leafs are targeting Flames defenseman Chris Tanev.

"He's a Toronto guy, Treliving signed him (in Calgary), I bet you he'll have a good idea of what it will take to keep him (in Toronto)," Friedman stated on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "That's the one guy I think Toronto goes hard to get, because even if he's acquired as a rental, I think they're going to be pretty confident they can keep him. But we'll see."

Tanev is one of the toughest players in the NHL with over 1500 career blocked shots in 740 career games. He is the type of player the Leafs could slot in on the first or second pairing and not need to worry about. He will certainly cost a lot to get but if Brad Treliving feels he is the missing piece, he could pull the trigger on a deal.
