With lots of questions looming inside and out of the Toronto Maple Leafs locker room after their round two loss, one major headline is the pending status of Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas. On Saturday night's Sportsnet broadcast, insider Elliotte Friedman revealed Dubas is the starting piece of the puzzle to figuring out the team's future.
"I think the first thing they have to figure out is the future of general manager Kyle Dubas," said Friedman.
After losing in five games to the Florida Panthers, changes to the entire organization are on the horizon and set to take place any day now. With Dubas' status unknown, Friedman provided his two cents and an update on the potential of bringing him back for the long term.
"I will stress that this is my opinion and my opinion alone, but I would be surprised if there were not discussion already about bringing him back," stated Friedman. "You have to recognize that you have to get there and you have to get there with terms that everyone is happy with... but my personal belief is that they have had discussions about bringing him back."
Friedman notes he believes there have already been discussions between the Leafs and Dubas on a potential extension and contract renewal ahead of one of the most anticipated offseasons in recent memory for this organization.
With so many crucial decisions to be made for the Leafs on based deadlines for free agency, player extension requirements, and roster changes, the Leafs will want to get this done quickly. Adding to that, there is a growing interest in the young general manager across the league, with the price and incentives likely to be increasing by the day, which will only make the effort to sign him that much more difficult.
"They have to get this done quickly because they have a lot of decisions to make up and down the roster and around the team.," said Friedman.
We'll see where this goes in the coming days and weeks. More to come.
