The Toronto Maple Leafs were very active in the free agency market this offseason, as they signed a handful of players to join the roster in the push for the Stanley Cup next season. Although, these new additions could only be on a temporary basis and we may see a whole new roster within the next couple of seasons.

Expiring And Short Term Deals

Even though the Leafs did sign a bunch of new guys such as Max Domi, Tyler Bertuzzi, and John Klingberg, it was only the contract agreed on with Ryan Reaves that was for longer than one season.

Along with this, Reaves is one of just 11 players that are under contract beyond next season. Fellow roster members such as Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf, and Morgan Rielly are among the major contract commitments. Yikes.

Superstars Collect Majority Of Salary Cap

Another major issue that the Leafs are facing is the huge amount of their salary cap that is tied into only a handful of their roster, which would be none other than the main core of Mitch Marner, John Tavares, Rielly, and Auston Matthews.

Although Matthews is not technically signed to a long-term deal worth a lot of money, rumors have suggested that an extension is more than likely in the works and almost completed. There was also the report that William Nylander is seeking his next contract to be worth $10 million per year for eight years, but it is safe to say that this deal will probably not be happening.

New GM Brad Treliving must make some decisions about his roster and their future in Toronto sooner than later. There will be loads of flexibility to plan out a championship roster for the Leafs, whether the roster looks similar or completely different. We will find out in just a short time span of two seasons.
