William Nylander is one of the Leafs' most valuable forwards in the NHL, especially given he is on a deal right now for under 7 million dollars. The talk of the offseason was how the Leafs wanted to deal with Nylander's contract, whether that was trading him, treating him as an "owned rental", or signing him to an extension.

Nylander Puts up Nice Performance in First Game of Year
Nylander showed just how valuable he is to the Leafs in last night's win against the Montreal Canadiens, scoring 1 goal and 1 assist in the win. While the experiment to play him at centre may have failed, he definitely showed how comfortable he is on the wing.

The Leafs are constrained with what they can offer Nylander as they have very limited cap room. However, moving Lafferty may have given them the room needed to get a deal done.
