NHL Considers New Rules for Video Reviews and Coach's Challenges
For years, the NHL has been using video reviewing technology to determine plays like goaltender interference or for checking if the puck crossed the goal line. In recent years, the NHL has also implemented this technology to review offside calls. This technology was also expanded to include reviewing major penalties and high sticking plays.
The review process that the NHL has implemented has left fans upset about the process. Due to the fact that it is time-consuming and the process is rather clunky. Despite the lack of support from fans, the NHL is still looking into expanding this process.
NHL discusses coach challenge expansion at GM meetings. Additional review for High Sticks and determination of puck over glass. More discussion tomorrow on the possibility of implementation.
For high sticking, officials are only allowed to review plays on double minors, to confirm that it was the stick of an opposing player that caused the impact. This rule does not cover plays where blood is drawn.
If these rules were implemented last season, the Leafs would have been allowed to review a play that wounded up costing them Game 7 of the Playoffs against the Lightning. During the third period of this game, Maple Leafs' forward David Kampf was called for a high stick penalty that never actually struck Cal Foote in the face.
Implementing these changes in the rules would allow for more opportunity for coaches to challenge plays, while increasing the chance of a delay of game penalty if the call is not ruled in their favour.
Many fans are asking where the league will draw the line with challenging and reviews. Has the NHL gone too far with allowing reviews and challenges?
