The Toronto Maple Leafs took a major step forward in 2022-23, but struggled for a deep playoff run, and after changing General Manager's this off-season, other changes were on the cards too.
However, it came as a surprise when the team hired not one but two coaches, seemingly for just one role, but now Leafs Coach Sheldon Keefe has revealed the reason why.
Two Coaches instead of One
Fans were shocked that Guy Boucher was returning to the NHL for the first time since coaching the Ottawa Senators back in 2019, and alongside him is Mike Van Ryn, who has spent the last five years as an assistant with the St. Louis Blues.
Why choose both?
When asked about hiring two names, Sheldon Keefe replied with a simple answer;
In going through that process I came across two people who can really help us, As (Maple Leafs GM) Brad Treliving had communicated to me to was put together the best staff possible to help us win.
It may have been a surprise, but Keefe is dedicated to helping the Leafs finally break a streak that goes back to 1967, and to do that, he needs a staff that he trusts, so this is certainly a solid explanation for the move.
