During Dubas' tenure with the team, the Leafs consistently struggled to find adequate depth scoring. This is a major reason why the team failed to go on deep playoff runs under his watch. During his five years with the team, they got out of the 1st round just once, in his last season with the organization. He consistently let talent walk though that could have provided that depth the team needed. One fan pointed out several moves he made in the 2019-20 season alone that hurt the team in the long run.
The Kadri trade is one that many Leafs fans are still bitter about. On the one hand, he did have a history of getting suspended at the worst possible moment in time. That likely made Dubas want to trade him. However, he immediately found success after leaving the team, winning the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022.
Another player Dubas delt in 2020 was Mason Marchment. The forward has gone on to become a legitimate scoring player since leaving the team after he had a breakout season with the Florida Panthers. This year he has been a critical part of the Dallas Stars, scoring the game-winning goal in game two against the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference finals Saturday night.
