Auston Matthews had a bit of fun at Matthew Knies's expense after the latter tried to pull a fast one on the referees during Toronto's game against the Seattle Kraken.

During Toronto's game against Seattle on Thursday, the team had a goal called back after Matthew Knies was deemed to have used a high stick in order to score.

It was a great effort but what happened next was quite a savvy move from the young forward.

After celebrating with his teammates, Knies paused a moment to let Jake McCabe get the fist-bumps started, knowing full well that he was the culprit and tried to pull one over on some unsuspecting officials.

It didn't work, and captain Auston Matthews wasn't letting Knies live it down either:

Maybe he doesn't realize there are 1,000 cameras that see everything. But I appreciate the effort.

Matthew Knies' Sneaky Move Just Part Of His Evolving Skillset

Knies isn't short on effort that's for sure. Looking at what he's brought to the table for Toronto this season, it's easy to see why.

This season, Knies has 21 goals, 15 assists, & 115 hits in 50 games while adding a plus-1 and averaging 18:24 of ice time; a near five minute increase from last season.

He's become a true power forward, and he's just starting to get into his groove which is scary given he's only 22.

The issue with Knies however is that he is a restricted free agent at the end of the season, and with the history of teams throwing offer sheets at players, it's crucial Toronto locks him up long-term.

We know he has the potential to be an elite forward in the league and the team can't afford to let him go without a fight.

The Maple Leafs need Knies to do what he's doing now, in the playoffs. We all know the history of Toronto's lack of scoring, and it's key that Knies comes out of the gate strong.

The attempt at a trying to fool the referees was a veteran move from a player in his second full season in the NHL.

If this is the type of passion we can expect from Knies then everyone will reap the benefits.

So what do you think? Did Matthew Knies make a fool of himself -- or did he earn your respect?
