In an interview, the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving explained why he decided to draft the defenseman Ben Danford in the first round.

In a trade with the Anaheim Ducks, Brad Treliving decided to give up his 23rd overall pick for the 31st and 58th selections:

"The #leafs trade pick No. 23 to Anaheim for Nos. 31 and 58. Toronto adds a second-rounder."

With the 31st overall pick, the Leafs chose to select the defenseman Ben Danford.

Treliving talked about the prospect in a press conference and revealed why they drafted him.

The 6-foot-1 right-handed defenseman from Madoc, Ontario is not only intelligent and competitive, he also has a high character that could have an impact in the NHL.

Brad Treliving said:

"We think he's a real intelligent player, a real competitive guy, right-shot defenseman. He's a guy that our staff was really focused in on. That's why we traded down. We thought we could slide down and hopefully [have] the availability to get him later, as we did. But, you know, lots of intangibles, high character kid, moves really well, he's just sort of scratching the surface for what he could be. Right-shot defenseman, hard to find."

Last season, the lifelong Leafs fans scored 33 points, including one goal, in 64 games with the Oshawa Generals.

We can't wait to see him on the ice at the Maple Leafs' training camp.
