Now that John Tavares is no longer the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, fans were wondering whether he would remain as an alternate captain after passing on his duties to Auston Matthews. The answer is yes, Tavares will be an alternate captain, which was confirmed by GM Brad Treliving.
John Tavares was the captain of the Maple Leafs since the start of the 2019 season, which was his second year with the club. In his career, he has picked up a total of 1,040 points in 1,109 games.
Auston Matthews becomes the first ever American born captain to take on this role with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his 562 career games with the Leafs, Matthews has scored 368 goals and 649 points.
There was talk that Auston Matthews was going to be the captain of the Leafs back in 2019, but after some personal legal issues he was dealing with, the C was handed to John Tavares instead. The team feels that they are in need of a fresh direction after struggling to make any deep playoff runs, so hopefully this change will lead to better results going forward.
John Tavares stated that he fully supports this decision to make Auston Matthews the captain, and he will continue to provide leadership to the group, and he feels like he is ready to have a big season ahead and help the Leafs win many games.
