Matthew Knies was injured last week against Columbus after bumping into a linesman, and now there's a timeline for his return according to Darren Dreger.

During last week's 5-1 drubbing at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Maple Leafs lost more than the game as forward Matthew Knies tumbled into a linesman and ended up needing to leave the game.

It was an unfortunate turn of events for the Maple Leafs and it was concerning given that he was ruled out for Wednesday's game and it looked like he may miss some more time.

But NHL Insider Darren Dreger has some insight into his return and it's a huge positive for Maple Leafs fans.

Matthew Knies Returning (Hopefully) Against Edmonton Oilers

It's not concrete that Knies is going to be on the ice Saturday but given the team still has three days until then it's more than enough time for him to recover in time for Saturday.

Knies was on the ice for the Maple Leafs' optional skate, but didn't participate in practice. Head coach Craig Berube was optimistic however regarding his young forward's status:

"I think he's close. It's improving every day. He was out there today, he's doing more & more. I thought I might see him in our practice a little bit, but that was not the case today."

Knies' return would be a welcome one for the Leafs, as not only have they been starved for offense their past two games, but the power forward has built upon his breakout 2023-24 season.

After scoring 15 goals and 20 assists last year, he's been even better already having 18 goals and 13 assists, but has also missed time twice due to injury.

The first time around, he was knocked silly by a dirty hit by Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Zach Whitecloud, leading to him missing some time due to presumed concussion-like symptoms.

If Toronto can get not only Knies back, but John Tavares as well then they will be set up perfectly for the start of February (which also offers them a two-week break).

For now, the Maple Leafs are employing Bobby McMann on the first line with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, and though he's a solid choice, the chemistry that Knies brings with the two superstars is irreplaceable.

Toronto has a bit of pressure with Knies too, as he's going to be a restricted free agent at the end of the season, and there will be several teams looking to field an offer sheet so Brad Treliving needs to snatch him up ASAP.

While it's not set in stone that Matthew Knies is headed back to the Maple Leafs this Saturday, all signs point to yes which can only mean good things going forward.
