The focus for much of this first half of the season has been in goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs. With Joseph Woll down with an injury, and Samsonov sent down to the minors, it seemed like the Leafs needed to make a trade in order to stay competitive this season.
Now, it's not looking like that is necessarily the case. Insider Elliotte Friedman revealed on his 32 Thoughts Podcast that the Leafs are looking to let Samsonov go on a bit of a run as the starter after his big win against the Kraken. Samsonov is expected to start the next handful of games.
This is intended to give Martin Jones a break, as he has stepped up to the plate when the Leafs needed him most. He has looked a little run down in his last few starts, and at 34, has earned a bit of a break.
The Leafs are looking to build off of their last win against the Kraken and will take on the red-hot Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday and then again on Saturday before the All-Star break.
This is a massive test that could set the tone for the stretch that is the rest of the season since Winnipeg is making a name as one of the best teams in the NHL right now. If Samsonov is able to step up and lead the Leafs to a few wins, he may make a case for at least sharing the number 1 spot with Jones.
We will see how he performs tomorrow night.
