Last night one of the Toronto Maple Leafs top trade targets was taken off of the board. After the trade was completed several reports confirmed why things did not work out for Toronto.
Reports came flying in yesterday indicating that Chris Tanev was on the verge of being traded. Maple Leaf fans got their hopes up before learning that Tanev was on his way to Dallas instead.
To DALLAS: Chris Tanev (75% retained), Cole Brady
To CALGARY: 2024 2nd Rd Pick, Artem Grushnikov, Conditional 2026 3rd Rd Pick, (50% of Tanev $)
TO NEW JERSEY: DAL 2026 4th Rd Pick (25% of Tanev $)
With the Maple Leafs missing out on Tanev the investigation into what went wrong began. Not long after a final realization was made on what kept the Maple Leafs from landing the top defenseman on the trade market.
Trades are always tricky to pull off in the NHL. This is especially true when the people negotiating are former colleagues. In the case of Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving and Flames GM Craig Conroy, the duo worked side by side for several seasons. According to reports this led to a major roadblock in the trade.
Re Tanev Trade & Zadorov Trades The @MapleLeafs were interested in both players, and as I reported- they tried trading for both at the same time and individually. It seems clear the @NHLFlames would've had to be blown away to send either to T.O.

Reports from several sources confirm that if the Maple Leafs were going to trade with the Flames they would need to overpay severely. This past relationship has now blocked the Maple Leafs from two players they coveted. However, the player the Maple Leafs do eventually acquire will likely cost significantly less than they would have given up to get Tanev or Zadorov.
If the Maple Leafs do not end up adding a defenseman before the deadline these failed negotiations could come back to bite GM Brad Treliving.
