Fan trade proposal surfaces: Leafs Easton Cowan to Jets in 1-for-1 deal
A new fan trade proposal recently surfaced, sending Toronto Maple Leafs' prospect Easton Cowan to the Winnipeg Jets in a 1-to-1 deal for Cole Perfetti.
While the Toronto Maple Leafs work overtime to build a Stanley Cup-winning roster for the short term, their scouts and management have also taken action on the sidelines to draft the right prospects for their long-term success. Among their most promising is forward Easton Cowan. After being a second-rounder in the 2021 OHL Draft, he was the 28th 2023 NHL Draft overall pick.
Despite the doubts many Toronto fans had, he was an early point streak leader in the OHL eventually posting 34 goals and 96 points in 54 games during the 2023-24 season with the London Knights.
However, one hockey fan still sees greener pastures for Toronto elsewhere, posting a trade proposal that would send the Maple Leafs prospect to the Winnipeg Jets. In return, they would get Cole Perfetti.
The Winnipeg Jets also have a recent history of playoff struggles, making it to the Conference Finals only once in franchise history. Cole Perfetti seemed like the type of forward who could get the job done and ultimately got selected by the team at the 10th overall spot in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. However, he has underperformed his expectations in the league so far, with only 38 points in 71 games last season. Many fans believe that Cole Perfetti simply needs a change of scenery to meet his full potential.
Although Easton Cowan has already exceeded expectations, a 1-to-1 trade for Cole Perfetti may still be beyond the pale for the Winnipeg Jets. Yet, with the Toronto Maple Leafs looking to keep a strong group of prospects, they might be against the idea themselves. Regardless, the question of which team would benefit more from this deal remains unanswered.
