After being investigated for violating the Swiss League's anti-doping policy, one former Maple Leaf has now officially given his statement on the matter.

It was reported earlier that former Maple Leafs forward Miro Aaltonen was under investigation for potentially violating the Swiss League's Anti-Doping Policy, and was indefinitely suspended while authorities looked into things.

It was a stunning bit of news that led to speculation as to what exactly could be the cause of the suspension and investigation, but the former member of the Leafs organization has finally broken his silence regarding the matter, trying to ensure his side of the story is heard after his deal was officially terminated.

Miro Aaltonen's Explanation For Violating Anti-Doping Policy

Aaltonen was honest in his explanation, and while it's not necessarily the greatest reasoning, it was a candid look into the lives of hockey players outside of the rink:

"During the break before Christmas in 2024, I was in a nightclub and apparently consumed a substance for recreational purposes that is not performance enhancing, but is banned in sport.

I will get the help I need and accept the consequences of my actions. As soon as I am allowed to do so, I would like to return to my profession. I sincerely apologize to my loved ones, Kloten, fans and teammates for my actions."

Whichever substance Aaltonen ingested clearly was in direct violation regardless of whether it "enhances performance". One could argue any performance diminishing substances are equally as detrimental.

Being a pro athlete requires the peak of physical fitness and anything that could jeopardize that, and potentially create a chain reaction of incidents; it's understandable why they are so quick to act.

Although he signed with HC Bern for the next two seasons after transferring from his current club Kloten in December, it's unknown if the Swiss team will be honoring his deal or seeking help from the League in determining how to best void his contract if necessary.

All we can hope is that Aaltonen has learned from his mistakes, gets the help he is seeking, and be able to come back with a fresh mind and body and continue to play the game he loves.
