The Toronto Maple Leafs are making a major change according to several sources. The Maple Leafs will be naming Auston Matthews the new captain and stripping John Tavares of the role.
Just a short while after the decision was made announced to the world by several insiders one particular source has confirmed the reason why. According to Chris Johnston, the decision stems from the Maple Leafs playoff loss to the Boston Bruins.
With new head coach Craig Berube coming in he also could want his own hand-picked leader heading into this new era of Maple Leafs hockey. Then finally of course John Tavares is near the end of his contract while Auston Matthews just signed his monster extension.
With the season just a couple of months away we will likely see and hear from the Maple Leafs' new captain Auston Matthews sooner rather than later. The more interesting perspective might be hearing from the now-former captain John Tavares on his future with the Maple Leafs.
