Given the names who are available for Brad Treliving to trade for, he's got no shortage of impact players who could make a big difference not only in the regular season, but the ever so important Stanley Cup Playoffs.
But the team needs a couple of pieces in order to shore up their holes, and while a lot of very good players are available, they may cost too much to justify acquiring them.
But Dave Pagnotta has two names on his updated trade board that could help Toronto a lot and they wouldn't break the bank either.
Toronto has been dealing with a lot of injuries this season, and currently sit sixth in the NHL for games lost at 215 games missed combined, and they need to ensure they have enough reinforcements heading into the playoffs; and acquiring Donato and Oleksiak make a lot of sense.
Pagnotta's comments on Donato are short, to the point, but explain pretty much what you need to know about him:
His performance this season has been very good, with 14 goals and 14 assists in 47 games, but he's averaged 14 goals and 15.3 assists over his last three seasons, to go along with an average of 81 hits so it's not just a flash in the pan campaign.
His cap hit would be dirt cheap compared to others at only $2M and it wouldn't cost them much more than a pick or two.
Trade Proposal
To Toronto Maple Leafs:
(C) Ryan Donato
To Chicago Blackhawks:
2025 4th Round Pick
2026 6th Round Pick
Oleksiak on the other hand is a towering 6'7 defenseman who would not only bring up Morgan Rielly's production, but he would give Toronto another massive shot-blocking weapon for Craig Berube to employ.
Pagnotta didn't say much about Oleksiak but did mention he does have a 16-team no trade clause, which might make things a bit difficult:
We previously touched on Oleksiak as he was reported to be on the block, but there's no doubt he would give a bunch of assistance to Toronto's blueline.
6'7, over 250 pounds, and tough as nails, the type of player he is would make Craig Berube blush. He blocks an absurd amount of shots including 177 last season, and already has 104 this season.
Not an offensive juggernaut, he still can contribute at times and does have four goals and seven assists with Seattle; more production than some of Toronto's other blueliners.
His contract is a bit of an issue at $4.6M for this season and the next, but it's a small price to pay for such a gamechanger, and Seattle does have three retention slots available to eat some money if Toronto needs them to.
Trade Proposal
To Toronto Maple Leafs:
(D) Jamie Oleksiak (SEA retains 50%)
To Seattle Kraken:
(F) Nick Robertson
2025 2nd Round Pick
Toronto's lineup instantly improves at both sides of the ice with these deals, and it didn't cost them more than a few picks and an inconsistent Nick Robertson.
If the team can stay healthy, they are already dangerous and with the additions of Donato and Oleksiak; it looks pretty solid.
Knies -- Matthews -- Marner
McMann -- Tavares -- Nylander
Pacioretty -- Donato -- Domi
Lorentz -- Kampf -- Minten
Rielly -- Oleksiak
McCabe -- Tanev
Ekman-Larsson -- Benoit/Myers
It might not be the big splash that fans were hoping for, but at a very cheap cost the Maple Leafs instantly improve all facets of their on-ice game.
Donato brings scoring and defense; Oleksiak brings a shutdown defenseman with an X-factor and if everything goes right, both men will find themselves lifting the Stanley Cup sooner than they anticipated.
