The dust is finally settling after Friday's blockbuster trade that sent Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes in a three-team deal that involved the Chicago Blackhawks and several different assets and picks.
Though the Hurricanes settled on Rantanen, according to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, the team initially kicked the tires on Toronto's Mitch Marner.
While Eric Tulsky decided to shock the world by acquiring Rantanen, he could have made an equally big one by acquiring the Maple Leafs dynamic winger according to Seravalli:
While it's unknown what the package for Marner would have included, his situation would have been a lot murkier than Rantanen's. He holds a full no-trade and no-movement clause in his deal and he needs to give the okay before any moves; a luxury not afforded to Rantanen.
Toronto also wouldn't want to add by subtraction unless they were absolutely certain the magnitude of player coming back is equal or greater than Marner; contract extension notwithstanding.
Besides, Marner wants to win here and given this season is as good a chance as he's had, Brad Treliving needs to focus on adding pieces elsewhere instead of trying to get ahead of a sticky situation.
It's unsurprising to see Carolina at least make a call to see if Marner was available, as he's been outstanding this year.
On pace for 112 points, he has 15 goals and 53 assists in 50 games and has evolved into a solid-two way player with an elite offensive arsenal.
For now, Mitch Marner is still a member of the Maple Leafs and he will do his best to help the team weather the storm that is the Carolina Hurricanes (no pun intended).
But if Toronto wanted to change the landscape of the NHL, they should start by winning the Stanley Cup and let everything else fall into place.
