Jonathan Toews' NHL Return Status for This Season Revealed, per Pierre Lebrun
Pierre LeBrun has revealed new details on the future of the former Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews on a potential return to the NHL.
Toews, formerly with the Blackhawks since being drafted by the club in 2006, has been out since 2023 dealing with continued lingering impacts brought on from COVID-19, also known as "long-COVID", as well as Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, an issue he's been dealing with for the past few years.
Toews shared to GQ Magazine that was interested in resuming his NHL career, feeling still a desire to continue to playing hockey if possible.
There's a part of me that really doesn't feel like my career is over yet, and who knows what this next part of the journey looks like, as far as getting back on the ice and trying to make a return to the NHL. There's never any guarantees in life, but I'm going to give it my best shot.
A new report from Pierre LeBrun outlines what could be the future of Jonathan Tavares, and if the former Blackhawks star could really return to Hockey after a long absence from the game.
Toews Return Details Given By Pierre LeBrun
Pierre LeBrun reveals new details on what could be Jonathan Toews' future in the NHL.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been linked to Toews, although the favorite seems to be Toews hometown Winnipeg Jets. LeBrun, however, says a deal for Toews to Winnipeg is more likely for next season, as it appears Toews won't play this season on the NHL.
It might be a perfect match, but next year.
My understanding of the situation is that Jonathan Toews is not planning a comeback for this season, that this is very much about seeing if he is up to coming back to the NHL for next year.
But the Jets angle is very real I believe, not only did Kevin Cheveldayoff tell media members in Winnipeg this week that the Jets would have interest in their hometown player Jonathan Toews, but the reality is that interest is mutual.
I think Jonathan Toews would absolutely see that as an absolute fit, but it's just not going to be this season the way things sound right now. - Pierre LeBrun
According to LeBrun, Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff told Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press that he would "hope to be in the mix" for Toews.
It's unlikely Chicago would be a destination for Toews, with the Blackhawks a retooling team with a new identity led by Connor Bedard.
Jonathan Toews, 36, was a first-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, third overall.
Toews won a World Championship gold in 2007 with Canada, and after a dominant season in the NCAA with North Dakota, Toews joined the Blackhawks.
Making his debut in the 2007-08 season alongside fellow youngster Patrick Kane, Toews was named Chicago's Captain in 2008.
Toews won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2010, as well as the Conn Smythe as the playoffs MVP.
The same year, Toews won a gold medal for Canada at the Olympics, making him a member of the Triple Gold Club as a Stanley Cup, Olympic & World Championship winner.
Toews won his second and third Stanley Cups with Chicago in 2013 and 2015, as well as a second Olympic gold in 2014.
In 1,067 career NHL games played, all with the Blackhawks, Toews has a career total of 372 goals, 511 assists & 883 points in 15 seasons.
