Joseph Woll has simply been incredible this season. He stepped in many times for Ilya Samsonov, who has struggled since game one.
Every time Woll steps on the ice, he gives a reason to coaches to make him number one.
It's still early in the season, but his numbers speak for themselves: a 3-1-0 record, 1.33 GAA and .961 SV%.
Not only that, he faced more high danger chances than almost every other goalies in the NHL.
Before the Leafs' game against the Stars of Thursday night, had stopped all of the 20 high danger chances against him. Woll did allow a goal on such an occasion yesterday, but his record is still almost perfect.
With only 15 games played in the NHL, he still needs time to grow and get better before he achieves his full potential.
His career record of 12-3-0, 2.11 GAA and .934 SV% makes him a Vezina Trophy caliber goaltender.
His impressive save percentage places him second best in the Maple Leafs history for a goalie's first 15 games. Only Ed Chadwick did better, with a 939 SV% in 1956-57.
He still has a lot to prove, but it's encouraging to think there's a true number one goalie coming up in the Maple Leafs organization. A lot can happen in 82 games, but it's tough to not get excited when thinking about his future.
