You know things are bad when your grandmother chastises your decision-making, but Kyle Dubas experienced that when his nana chimed in about Tristan Jarry's contract.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have had a rough start to the 2024 season, so far sitting at a 3-6-1 this season, and while they've managed to average over three goals a game, their goaltending has been atrocious. Giving up 43 goals in 9 games in rough, and both Joel Blomqvist and Tristan Jarry haven't been as good as Pittsburgh needs them to be.

It's especially bad for Jarry, who signed a massive five-year, $26.88M contract last year but has performed terribly so far. Only 1-1-0, Jarry has a 5.47 GAA and .836 SV% and has given up 12 goals on 70 shots. The contract extension looks worse and worse by the day, and Kyle Dubas is hearing it from everyone.

Including his own grandmother:

It's not every day you get the family member criticism so openly, and the fact it's Dubas' grandmother is hilarious. It invokes imagery of an angry Grandma Dubas yelling at the television for her grandson's team to do better, and I'm sure Dubas has gotten a phone call or some type of correspondence from his grandmother about his business decisions, or the team's performances.

Kyle Dubas defended the signing back in July 2023, believing his injury history is a non-factor given his small sample size:

"Dubas defends the Jarry deal by looking back at the last three seasons. He says Jarry has played well through injuries. His age and the marketplace made it logical. "His sample shows he can be better... it's been made clear to him what my expectations are."

The Penguins recently sent Jarry on a conditioning assignment with the idea for him to reset his focus and work on getting back to form:

It's not just Grandma Dubas who is frustrated with the Penguins, as fans are calling for the team to not only move on from Jarry but to move on from head coach Mike Sullivan as well:

It's a rough slide for the once-dominant Penguins, as they've missed the playoffs the last two seasons, and this year doesn't hold hope for that to change. The last time the Penguins made it past the first round was in the 2017-2018 season, and that's only the year after their back-to-back Stanley Cup wins. It has not been the way it once was, and Penguins fans are left disappointed after getting used to so much success.

The issue of Pittsburgh's goaltending is just one of the many things wrong with the once-dominant franchise, and whether it starts with Jarry, or they do a whole roster overhaul, there's one thing for sure:

Grandma Dubas will have a close eye on her grandson and make sure he knows when he messes up.
