With Toronto in the middle of a very disappointing three-game losing streak where they not only have been outscored 13-4, but the team has slowly begun to lose what was once a tight grip on the Atlantic Division, only one point ahead of Florida.
Even worse, it looks like John Tavares is going to miss some time, and the face the Leafs already have offensive issues is not a good sign especially for a crucial January that offers no favors.
Everyone needs to step things up and get their game back on track.
So it's no surprise that head coach Craig Berube is trying to get in the ear of his players and try to make sure they know exactly what he expects of them.
During Wednesday's practice, Berube and Domi had a little chit-chat regarding things, and now the coach explained what he said to his forward.
While Berube enjoys how Domi is gliding along the ice, he needs more goal-scoring from his third-line pivot.
This season Domi hasn't truly lived up to his four-year, $15M contract he signed this summer. He only has three goals and 12 assists in 37 games, not playing the best defense and in the middle of a 12-game goalless drought.
Toronto is going to need Domi more than ever given they are down such a key piece like Tavares.
It's unknown if Domi is going to shoot up to the second line in order to replace the former captain in the lineup, but if he does he needs to find some chemistry with the struggling William Nylander and Matthew Knies.
Domi will get a chance to put Berube's advice into action on Thursday night when he faces off against former coach Sheldon Keefe and the New Jersey Devils.
The game is scheduled to start at 7pm ET.
