Leafs reporter predicts Mitch Marner's next contract and it's big
Mitch Marner's next cap hit is a slight increase, making him beyond likely to remain a Toronto Maple Leaf moving forward.
Mitch Marner has proven to be an elite player in the NHL, despite the many off-season noises and rumors surrounding his future as a Maple Leaf, it has become a priority for GM Brad Treliving to keep the hometown boy in Toronto.
Marner will be entering the final year of his 10.9 million, six year contract, therefore he will become a UFA on July 1st, 2025. A Leafs reporter has revealed what his next contract will look like in Toronto.
according to The Leafs Nation's Jon Steitzer, Marner's cap hit is likely to fall in the same percentage range as the Elias Pettersson deal in Vancouver, which is 13.89% of the cap, or in the $12.2M range under the current $88M salary cap. As Steitzer also pointed out, that number would jump to $12.4M per season with next year's salary cap expected to reach $93M.
This contract would earn him 12.2M dollars, just about one million less than Maple Leafs star centre Auston Matthews. It may be a concerning contract for fans, but statistically it is right given his production in recent years.
Mitch Marner's next projected contract:
12.2M dollars x 8years = 97M dollars
With a trade seeming unlikely with the NHL draft wrapped up, it seems like Marner will remain a Leaf going into next season at least, and maybe an extension aswell.
